Headmaster’s Newsletter – 7 September 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the new school year and a special welcome to all new parents. A school is nothing without its pupils and staff. After the relative quiet of the holidays it is always the case that the buildings seem to be brought back to life by the palpable energy and excitement all the way from Small School up to those in their final year in Hans Place. As you will see from the calendar on the website you will be receiving invitations to the Parents and Tutors’ Social Evenings in Founders’ Hall. These evenings are for you to meet your children’s tutors for the coming year and to meet the other parents in your child’s year group. It is a social evening and not a Parents’ Evening. If you have anything in particular you wish to discuss about your child you should make an appointment with their Senior Tutor in the usual way. The dates are below:

  • 13 September – Small School
  • 18 September – Upper and Lower Senior School
  • 20 September – Lower School
  • 25 September – Upper School Kappa and Delta
  • 27 September – Upper School Beta and Gamma
  • 2 October – Upper and Lower Transitus
  • 4 October – Middle School
  • 9 October – Sixth Form

In addition to the social evenings we are running a series of talks for parents that are being curated by our Academic Director Mr Kenneth Glover. The first of these is this Wednesday, principally for parents with boys in Upper Senior School, on the ISEB Pre-Test and senior school options. Letters are being sent out separately for these events.

As we have done for the last few years, we will be carrying out some standardised testing over the next couple of weeks throughout the school. Absolutely no preparation is needed for these tests, which vary in their focus depending on the age of the child. The results that are produced are very helpful to the teaching staff in support of your children’s learning in the coming year.

The deadline for Friday Club applications is this coming Monday, 10 September. Details of the clubs on offer and how to apply are on the website. Clubs start on Friday 21 September. We hope to have places confirmed by the beginning of that week.

Monday is Music Day. The children in Upper School and above will all have the opportunity to try an enormous range of instruments to see which fires their imagination. Children in Middle School have a slightly reduced selection. Please fill in and return the form as soon as you can. If your child wishes to continue the same instrument as last year you will still need to fill in a form.

There will be a Secondhand uniform sale in Cadogan Gardens this Tuesday from 3.30pm until 5.00pm. This is traditionally a very busy sale so your patience is appreciated. All profits from these sales are donated to the St. Nicholas Fund at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. A flyer is attached to this newsletter.

There are two companies that operate a bus service to and from school. Bliss Coaches operate a service to school in the morning and SC Transport operate the service at the end of day.
If you are interested in either of these services please contact the companies directly.
Bliss Coaches – Sue Stattersfield – 020 7394 6358 – sue@coachcentre.co.uk

SC Transport – Shane Campbell – 07827 602939
It should be noted that we are happy to facilitate these bus services but they are operated and managed independently of Hill House.

You will find attached to this newsletter the details of the school’s accident insurance scheme for all pupils.

I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming weeks.

Best wishes,

Richard Townend
