Headmaster’s Newsletter – 11 January 2019

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! Welcome back to a short but very busy term. The next ten weeks are filled with trips, concerts, Parents’ Evenings and, for our older pupils, exams and interviews. The girls in Upper Transitus are sitting the various exams and assessments for their secondary schools over the next few weeks. Likewise, some of the boys are having assessments, exams and interviews for the schools that test at this time of year rather than in the summer term. We wish them all the very best of luck and know they will be a credit to themselves and reap the rewards they deserve.

Friday clubs begin next Friday, 18 January. The renewals are being processed and allocations will be confirmed at the start of next week. If you have not sent in your renewal yet please do so immediately as this delays the allocation of places and you may miss out on your preferred choice.

The first Parents’ Evening of the term is on Monday in Founders Hall for parents of pupils in Lower Sixth. An email with details of the evening has been sent earlier.

The monthly Secondhand uniform sale is this Tuesday in Cadogan Gardens, please see the attached flyer.

On Tuesday the first of this term’s ski groups depart for Glion. This year we will be taking three groups of girls and three groups of boys through the term. The snow is falling around the chalet today so we hope the weather will be set fair for their arrival.

I would like to draw your attention to the Showcase on Tuesday evening in Founders’ Hall. International Trumpeter and raconteur Crispian Steele-Perkins will be giving a Masterclass to our Brass players. He is quite simply one of the leading trumpeters of his generation and it is wonderful for our children that he will be coming back for a third time. We enjoy having him and he clearly enjoys coming to us. I would recommend the evening to all children and parents with an interest in music. It is a chance to hear not only his technical knowledge and advice but also an insight into the world of the travelling classical musician at the top of his profession. Tuesday at 6pm in Founders’ Hall.

This week we have launched a new addition to the school website, the Parent Portal. We are starting small and intend to enlarge over time. Initially the curriculum overviews have been posted for each year group. In time it is our intention to have fixture, showcase and trip letters available on here too, amongst other useful information that is relevant only for existing parents. You will need to create an account to access the portal, which is very straightforward to do. For safeguarding purposes each account needs to verified which may take a couple of days in the first instance. Thank you for your patience. The portal can be found at the top right-hand corner of the homepage.

Some polite reminders to get the new year off to a good start. In this colder weather it is important that pupils come to school adequately and correctly dressed. The school winter coat/waxed jacket is a very warm coat and when combined with a school hat, scarf, gold jumper, v-neck and cravat will be more than sufficient for any weather conditions we may experience in London. Only brown or dark tan shoes are to be worn with the uniform. Trainers are not to be worn to or from school. The only exception to this is if a pupil is going home wearing the school sports kit.

Finally may I remind all parents with children in Cadogan Gardens to observe our one-way system when dropping off in the morning or collecting in the evening by car. It makes a huge difference to the efficiency of the operation and makes for a calmer experience for all. Likewise, if you need to get out of your car to come into the building then please park legally so that you can take your time and not inconvenience other road users.

Details of all showcases, fixtures and events can be found on the calendar page of the website.

Best wishes,

Richard Townend
