Headmaster’s Newsletter – 16 October 2020

Dear Parents,

At this moment in time we could all do with some good news to cheer us up and we have it!

We congratulate Alessandro Willis D’Aragona and Alexandros Richter who have just been awarded academic scholarships at City of London Boys’ School –  a splendid achievement. Alessandro and Alexandros started at City of London in September. The scholarship exams should have been during the summer term but were deferred due to lockdown and have only recently taken place. Congratulations to both boys and also to the tutors here at Hill House who made sure that the period of online learning during the summer term maintained the level of such academic achievement.

On Monday we are beginning music showcases in Founders’ Hall with limited numbers of performers and socially distanced seating for parents. The Choral Scholars will be performing Fauré’s Requiem. Then from 10 November instrumental showcases will resume on a similar basis and invitations will be sent out by tutors next week. All showcases will now be ticketed events.

Alas we cannot hold Assemblies in St Columba’s while the seating is limited to just 45 so we hope to hold Remembrance Assemblies for the Sixth Form and Transitus on 11 November in Founders’ Hall. Due to limitations on capacity sadly it will not be possible to invite parents this year.

As is traditional we will be having a Mufti Day next Friday, the day before Half Term. We will be raising money for Auditory Verbal UK as part of their “Loud Shirt Day” campaign. Auditory Verbal work with very young deaf children and their families helping them to develop age appropriate language, which means that then they are very often able to attend mainstream schools.

If you have not returned your child’s ‘Flu vaccination form yet, please do so by this Monday. The form (both pages) should be returned to your child’s Senior/Form Tutor.

Billings & Edmonds will be coming to Founders’ Hall tomorrow, Saturday 17 October, 10.30am to 2.00pm for their pop-up shop in preparation for the change into winter uniform after Half Term. They will be selling all items of uniform, including sports kit. Some additional slots have been made available on the online booking system. If you are looking for only one or two items it will also be possible to turn up without appointment. Please follow the link below to book your slot.

Thank you for your very generous donations to the Harvest collection for The Upper Room. The driver had to make two separate trips to collect everything. During this time of Covid we are all aware that many people have been affected in many ways and while charitable needs have gone up charitable giving has gone down. We have supported The Upper Room for many years and know that your donations are always gratefully received.

Best wishes,

Richard Townend
